Google Announces Two New Apps Allo and Duo

Allo and Duo are the two new chat apps announced by Google at this year's I/O developer conference. While Allo is for text messaging, Duo is for video chats. As we all know, Google already has a video chat app running - Hangouts Messenger. For users who are worried that the old app will close down, need not worry. Google assures that Hangouts Messenger will continue functioning along with the two new apps.

Google's VP of communication Products Nick Fox in an interview for Engadget mentioned that there is no point in merging the two apps into one, “the reality is that [video and text] are pretty different types of communication”. so the company has instead opted to building “focused experiences that do what they're intended to do really, really well.”

Duo is similar to video chatting services, except that it gives a glimpse at who is making the call, helping the recipient decide whether to answer. Google calls this feature, "Knock, knock."

Allo the text messaging app will feature a robotic assistant that will suggest automated responses to texts.

Google assures that Hangouts Messenger will continue functioning along with the two new apps. Hangouts Messenger did not do as well as its rivals - WhatsApp, Viber, Facebook Messenger and Apple's Facetime app. The reason behind this could be the late entry into the scene.

Speaking about Hangouts, Fox added, "Because Hangouts is built on a Google account, because it's deeply integrated with Google apps, the Apps suite, Gmail, Calendar and so on, it's seen much more success in the enterprise. It will increasingly focus on that kind of group collaboration enterprise productivity space.”
